Australia Australia AustraliaThe swinging keeper, I understand is designed to provide tension and additional locking strength when the rod is inadvertently forced up through the gate in the direction of escape, therefore not opening easily, which is cleaver but its overly cumbersome. I removed the swinging rod keeper and replaced it with marine grade 4mm bungee cord, fixed one end of the chord to the existing hinge-side where the keeper used to attach. I then cut a 4mm slot where the existing latch used to latch/ unlatch (this is where the bungee when stretched, now slots into and keeps in place with a simple barrel knot - extra length/ tag after the know for holding). The next thing I did was wrap the entire inside of the rod holder 2mm neoprene, glued in place with waterproof gorilla contact adhesive. The rod is now protected from scratching (for those who care about their rods) and it does not rattle around and make noise. I modify anything of mine, when in my opinion, needs improvement. That being said, I can't criticize this product too heavily as most of the design works very well but some additional thought could have gone into it.
